The Fox Turned 20

We’d like to thank everyone who came to our 20th celebrations on April 26th 2025. It was truly special and a touch emotional to see so many familiar faces. A realisation that this place means so much to us all, and has been so integral to the Anglian Country Inns journey – the first Hertfordshire establishment we fell in love with, all those years ago.  

 

Cliff Nye had long been a Willian resident and local of The Fox when he decided to buy the pub in 2005. Cliff had already bought The White Horse at Brancaster Staithe in Norfolk several years before, so was something of a veteran of the pub game at this point. When The Fox came up for sale, it was a no-brainer to invest in the local and give it the love it deserved and make something truly spectacular.  

 

The Fox became the first pub in Hertfordshire to be authentically described as a ‘gastropub’ a relatively new phrase at the time. It reflected then, what it does today, an establishment with a commitment to great local food, seasonable produce with an eye on sustainability and taste. The Fox went on to win many awards of course, including Michelin recognition in 2021, 2 AA rosettes, plaudits such as Tom Kerridge declaring The Fox to have 'the best pub fish and chips in the UK; The Sunday Times wrote ‘one of the best restaurants with rooms in England’; and described by The Evening Standard as one of the ‘best pubs with rooms 1 hour from London’. This same service continues to this day.
